Ranthambore
An Introduction
The paradise for wildlife lovers is known for the breeding and conservation of the population of Indian Tigers. Various documentaries have been made by the National geographic and Discovery channel featuring the forest of the Ranthambore tiger reserve. Tourism is one of the chief sources of income of this place. Ranthambore is 11 kms from the nearest Railway station viz. Sawai Madhopur and 160 kms from the capital city of Rajasthan ‘Jaipur’.
History of Ranthambore
The area was ruled by the Chauhan Rulers and Ranthambore was the earliest settlement near Sawai Madhopur. The Ranthambore Fort which was a hunting stay for the rulers is more than thousand years old and the actual makers of the fort are still unknown. The fort symbolizes the glory of the ruler Hammir Dev of Mewar who took over it from the Chauhan dynasty. The present Ranthambore National Park was the hunting grounds of the rulers and their guests.

Ranthambore National Park
It is spread over the changing landscape of the Aravalis which have sharp and conical hills of the Vindhyas with gentle and abrupt slopes. Although, the flora and fauna of Ranthambore has over 500 species and some of the rarely seen fauna also are a part of its landscape. The tiger reserve is celebrated for the most numbers of Tigers presently residing here and they can be seen wandering or simply basking in the sun. The reserve consists of three prime lakes namely Padam lake, Raj Bagh and the Malik Lake; all three of these provide ample amount of water for the fauna of the jungle and good enough for the aquatic vegetation to flourish. Animals such as Sambar deer, tigers, leopards, macaque, jungle cats, chital, sloth bears, five stripped palm squirrels, Rufus tailed hare, jackals, langoors, common palm civets, Indian wild boar, stripped hyenas, nilgai, desert and toddy cats are common sight here.
Ranthambore Fort
Ranthambore tiger reserve is the main attraction of Ranthambore but the 10th century fort amicably blends in with the whole landscape. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also has the Trinetra Ganesh Temple situated nearby, the temple is visited by many people throughout the year. The fort is believed to be constructed during the 944 CE making it thousand years old. The Jain Temples, Rajbagh ruins and Jogi Mahal are some of the remnants in the fort one can see. The Ranthambore Fort gives surprisingly captivating views of the National Park from the height.
