Pushkar
An Introduction
Pushkar is one of the main pilgrimage sites of the Hindus. This city is also known as the city of Lord Brahma. The name ‘Pushkar’ means blue lotus flower. Pushkar has a lot of interesting stories associated with its origin. There are fifty two ghats present in Pushkar and people bathe in the holy water of this lake as it is believed that bathing in the holy water of the Pushkar ghats releases ones spirit from the cycle of life and death. There are many different temples in Pushkar which are also known tourist spots here. Pushkar lies in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan and is at a distance of 14 kilometers from the city of Amjer. In the recent years the popularity of Pushkar has grown with a tremendous speed among the international tourists.
History of Pushkar
Pushkar has a lot of interesting stories associated with its origin. However, there is no particular date or year known when the town of Pushkar was found but one of the stories goes like this. The Hindu god Brahma was to perform a Mahayagna to kill a demon named Vajranash. The gods released a swan with a blue lotus flower in its beak to select the site for the Mahayagna and the swan landed here in Pushkar and hence, the land of Pushkar is still considered to be one of the most sacred places on the land of India.

Pushkar Lake
The sacred lake of Pushkar receives inflow of water from the Luni River, spread in a catchment area of 22 sq kms. Pushkar Lake is surrounded by over 500 temples and during the Pushkar Fair held in the Indian month of Kartik, many devotees come and take sacred dip in the waters of the lake. With a depth of 10 meters, the lake is a habitat of different types of fishes and other aquatic species.
Jagatpita Brahma Temple
It is one of the few temples of the Hindu Lord Brahma in the world which is around 2000 years old. The temple is has inlay of coins on the walls belonging to different centuries and is made of marble. The earliest mention of the temple is found in the 4th century coins. The inner sanctums of the temple is decorated with sculpts of Lord Brahma and his consort Savitri.

Famous Festivals in Pushkar
The most celebrated festivals in Pushkar is the five day Pushkar Camel Fair, which is India’s largest camel fair held in the months of October or November.
