Orchha
An Introduction
Orchha is a perfect blend of history and nature in one place. It served as the capital of the Rajputana kings of Bundela and carries history in its every part. The town of Orchha is situated by the Betwa River and is located at a distance of just 15 kms from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. Orchha is far from the hustle and bustle of the city and its splendidly secure monuments will give you the insight of how ‘the Maharajas of India’ would have lived their life.
History of Orchha
Rudra Pratap Singh was the first King of Orchha and was also the founder of this place; he founded Orchha in the 16th century and built the Orchha fort as his residence. Later the princely state of central region of India called the Bundelakhanda, this state received special attention of the Mughals due to their honesty with the Mughals leading to friendly relations.

Orchha Fort
The Orchha fort is one of the most sought out spot by tourists in Orchha. The fort was built by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh and the most beautiful building in the fort complex is the Raj Mahal besides Jahangir Mahal and the Rai Parveen Mahal. It also houses many temples and other buildings that were built at different times by the queens and the Kings of the ruling family.
Chaturbhuj Temple
The Chaturbhuj temple was constructed by the Bundela kings in the 17th century. The site was selected by the king in the way that the idol of Lord Krishna would be visible from the balcony of his room and he can get a glimpse of god every day. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and exquisite view of Orchha can be seen from the top floor of this temple.
Chhatris
The Chhatris are cenotaphs constructed in order to glorify the contributions of the mighty kings of Bundelakhand. There are 14 Chhatris that are constructed besides the Betwa River at Kanchana Ghat and they reflect the great construction skills of the craftsmen. One of the temple shaped cenotaphs is dedicated to the brave Bundela chieftain Bir Singh Deo.
