Bandhavgarh National Park
An Introduction
Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh and is spread over sprawling forests which cover the area of 1536 sq km. The core area being 105 sq km is blessed by the nature to host the development of many species of animals. The most sought after are the Indian Tigers which are mightily prospering in the region of the Bandhavgarh National Park which lies on the Vindhya Hills ranges spread in the central region of the country. Bandhavgarh is known to have one of the highest numbers of Royal Bengal Tigers in India.
History of Bandhavgarh National Park
Bandhavgarh National Park is located in the Umaria District of Madhya Pradesh. Before becoming a National Park, it was used as the hunting ground (Shikargah) by the Maharajas of Rewa. Their hunts are on display in the Rewa Royal Palace. After killing about 109 tigers that were threat to the villagers and animals in the area the Maharajas handed over this property to the state government and it was declared a national park in 1968.
Flora and Fauna in Bandhavgarh National Park
The forest inside the park consists of sal, Indian Ghost tree and bamboo trees. The forest also has vast open grasslands which were cleared after abandoning villages for making way for the animals.
The jungle area of the park consists of vegetation ranging from the tall grasslands to forests of the Sal and this makes it a perfect habitat for various species of animals and birds. The park is also a home to a large breeding population of Leopards, deers and monkeys. Bandhavgarh is also home to great Bengal tigers and some famous tigers like Charger, Sita, Mohini and Bamera, are all well known tigers of the Bandhavgarh National park. Currently Bamera is the dominant tiger of the jungle. The rich fauna of Bandhavgarh also includes animals such as Indian Bison, Gaur, sambar, barking deer, Indian Wolf, stripped hyena, etc. The Indian Bison were reintroduced from the neighboring Kanha National Park, which is also situated in Madhya Pradesh.
Climate in Bandhavgarh National Park
Bandhavgarh enjoys typical Indian climate with abundant rainfall. The best time to visit is from the month of October to March. The park remains closed during the months of July to mid October.
